UKGC Mandates Affordability Checks for Deposits Over £150/month
The UK Gambling Commission's new affordability framework comes into force this month - what it means for players.
The UK Gambling Commission's revised affordability framework took effect on 1 June 2026, requiring all UKGC-licensed operators to conduct light-touch financial vulnerability checks on any player whose net deposits exceed £150 per rolling 30-day window.
The check is intended to be frictionless for the vast majority of players - pulling publicly available credit indicators rather than requiring documentary proof. Players are only escalated to enhanced affordability checks (bank statements, payslips) at much higher thresholds (£500+/month net loss).
Industry reaction has been muted. The £150 threshold replaces an inconsistent patchwork of operator-set checks and is widely seen as the lower-friction option. Player groups argue the threshold remains too low and risks pushing casual play to unlicensed offshore sites.
What it means in practice: most players will not notice the change. Those depositing £200+/month should expect a one-time soft credit check during their next session.
